3 Body Problem - Season 1

3 Body Problem has a spectacular beginning.

The first few episodes are a fantastic spectacle. The sophisticated mix between (historical) drama, science fiction and games works out well. It starts in Mao's China. The harsh way in which scientists and other potential opponents of the regime were dealt with ensured that Ye Winje ended up in a prison camp. Her father's death leaves her full of feelings of revenge. Not only against the perpetrators of her father's murder but actually against all humanity. Ye Winje is convincingly played by Zine Tseng (the young version) and Rosalind Chao (Sweet Tooth, as the older version).

Although it is clear from the beginning that Ye's situation is related to the rest of the events, it remains unclear for a long time what exactly it is. That is slowly becoming clearer. It turns out to be the catalyst behind all the special things that happen. For example, several scientists appear to die unexpectedly. It often looks like suicide, but it soon becomes clear that this is not the case. This is being investigated under the leadership of former police officer Da Shi (Benedict Wong, Marco Polo). It soon turns out that Da has a different client than expected.

The danger turns out to be much closer than expected.

Central to the story are the young scientists Auggie (Eiza González, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), Jack (John Bradley, Game of Thrones), Jin (Jess Hong, Inked), Saul (Jovan Adepo , The Stand) and Will (Alex Sharp, The Good Lord Bird). This group of friends is confronted with all special events in different ways. One person receives a remarkable ultimatum, another cannot resist the temptation of a dangerous game and another struggles with his addiction. When Will turns out to be terminally ill and the group has to endure even more suffering, they become increasingly combative. The result is that they end up further and further into a world unknown to them.

3 Body Problem starts off excellently. The mystique surrounding the events in China, the strange objects and events create tension. Especially when it becomes clear that so many scientists are being murdered. Moreover, several inexplicable situations continue to increase the tension. The danger turns out to be much closer than expected. Unfortunately, that tension comes to an end when the series seems to fall into a typical 'us versus them' battle. The layering of the beginning seems to become one-dimensional. Fortunately, the series manages to bounce back very well in the final episodes. This makes it an excellent prelude to more. This story has not yet been completely told. Hopefully the series will be able to maintain that very high level of the beginning and end for a season. That could easily make a difference in the assessment.
