All the Light We Cannot See - Miniseries

War drama All the Light We Cannot See opens your eyes.

Beautifully filmed love and war drama set in occupied France during the Second World War. The fictional story takes place during the battle for Saint-Malo in 1944. The coastal town is frequently bombed and the Allies are on the doorstep. It causes chaos and unrest among the Germans. The Allied bombers also appear to know exactly where the German fortified positions are.

In four episodes we are presented with the story about the blind Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti, The Spiderwick Chronicles). She keeps in touch with the world through her radio. Moreover, she tries to find her missing father (Mark Ruffalo, I Know This Much Is True) in this way. Her only outing is to the bakery. Throughout the series it becomes clear why this is a very important part of her life. Her uncle Etienne Leblanc (Hugh Laurie, House M.D.) plays an important role in this. Looking back, more background is given as to why she ended up in Saint-Malo.

Marie-Laure's calls are answered by the German soldier Werner (Louis Hofmann, Dark). He finds comfort in her messages. Moreover, it reminds him of his past in which he listened to messages from 'the professor' on the radio. He tries to prevent his superiors from arresting Marie-Laure. Not knowing that the ruthless SS officer Reinhold van Rumpel (Lars Eidinger, Babylon Berlin) has his own reasons for chasing Marie-Laure. Reinhold moves heaven and earth to find her. He uses brute force. Werner is disappointed in the German army, so he tries to come to terms with himself again. Reinhold, on the other hand, has no scruples whatsoever.

As so often, everyone speaks English in this series. Whether they are French or German. It does not matter. That takes away from the authenticity of the series a bit. To ease the pain, the two German protagonists mentioned are played by Germans. As a result, their accent provides a small advantage. Furthermore, the story is well put together. Although the love scene at the end is predictable and, in my opinion, a bit too easily put together. The fact that it looks meticulously cared for down to the last detail also means that All the Light We Cannot See gets a nice seven and a half.
