Dominic Rains is leaving Chicago Med after five seasons

Chicago Med fans' fears after the season nine finale have come true: Dr. Crockett Marcel leaves Gaffney Chicago Medical Center.

Dominic Rains, who has played the emergency room surgeon since season five, is leaving the medical drama on NBC as a regular actor. It is unclear whether he will reprise his character as a guest star in the upcoming tenth season.

In the season nine finale of Chicago Med, a possible exit for Rains was foreshadowed when Crockett was told by Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) to take all the time he needed following the death of one of his patients, a boy, and the boy's father.

The boy died after Crockett canceled his planned liver transplant due to an infection, despite the father's plea that not going through with the surgery would be a death sentence for his son. After the boy's death, his father took his own life.

Crockett was shocked by the news, which brought back memories of losing his own daughter to leukemia.

Chicago Med follows the emotional daily chaos of the city's state-of-the-art trauma center and the lives of the doctors, nurses and employees who hold it all together.

Emergency surgeon Crockett Marcel was introduced as a recurring character at the beginning of season five, with Rains promoted to a regular player shortly afterwards. He also appeared in the other One Chicago series in crossovers. Before joining Chicago Med in 2019, Rains appeared in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Chicago Med is undergoing a major transition into next season, with co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider stepping down after nine years. They will be succeeded by Allen MacDonald.
