Fallout - Season 1

Fallout is back to the future times two.

In a futuristic apocalyptic world, the 1950s feeling of the last century prevails. Not only in image but especially in sound. That contradiction is because the nuclear war that ends the world takes place in the 1950s. The result is that what is left is a return to that period. Big billboards, the destroyed cars and the ruined buildings. The chosen music ensures that the picture is complete. The predominantly cheerful music and the usually brightly colored images provide a sophisticated balance compared to the death and destruction that Fallout also shows.

That balance between seriousness and humor ensures that Fallout earns extra points. The naive Lucy (Ella Purnell, Yellowjackets), who grew up in the protective world of the underground Vaults (gigantic vaults in which entire communities live), is an exponent of that fine balance. By following her we see the above-ground world through her strikingly large eyes. It is a world that is at odds with what she has learned, but in which she ultimately manages to survive.

That balance between seriousness and humor ensures that Fallout earns extra points.

Lucy partly owes this to her meeting Maximus (Aaron Moten, neXt). Maximus is trained as a knight of the Brotherhood of Steel. A militaristic group that sees itself as a police force of the (absent) constitutional state. However, Maximus' teacher turns out not to be as heroic as his impressive armor suggests. The ultimate consequence is that Maximus has to follow his own path. The original mission more or less necessarily becomes his mission.

Lucy and Maximus are hindered by The Ghoul (Walton Goggins, Justified). This almost immortal survivor appears to have a rich history. His past goes back so far that the historical flashbacks help to understand what happened in the 1950s. In this day and age, however, The Ghoul is only concerned with one thing. To survive. In order to do that, he has the same goal as Lucy and Maximus.

All three are confronted with all kinds of other forces in their journey. There is also a lot going on in the Vault that Lucy left behind. There is more mystery than the perfect underground world suggests at first glance. Above ground, the three main characters find themselves in different situations. Monsters, survivors, rebels and other scum ensure that every episode is fun.

Fortunately, the second season has already been announced, because this first season demands more.

Fallout shows that a television series based on a game can have quite some depth. The storylines of the three protagonists are well put together. The various storylines come to a beautiful symbiosis in the final episode. It helps that the acting is excellent. The interaction between image and sound is also perfect. The humor ensures that the brutal violence and the amount of blood are not so noticeable. Fallout maintains a strangely light-hearted tone while the story and images are not exactly cheerful. It is precisely that remarkably light-hearted approach that absolutely works to the advantage of this series. Fortunately, the second season has already been announced, because this first season demands more.
