Prequel series NCIS: Origins casts Austin Stowell as a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs

Austin Stowell takes on the role of Mark Harmon's signature NCIS character Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Narrated by Harmon, the new series begins in 1991, years before the events of NCIS, and chronicles the younger years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Stowell has been cast as young Gibbs in NCIS: Origins, the prequel to the original NCIS, which has a straight-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcast season. Production is in the hands of CBS Studios.

In the series, Gibbs (Stowell, photo) begins his career as a rookie special agent in the fledgling NIS office at Camp Pendleton, where he earns his place in a tough team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.

Stowell's series roles also include the limited series A Friend of the Family (Peacock), Catch-22 (Hulu) and the upcoming Three Women (Starz). In feature films, he appeared in Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies, Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, the psychological thriller Swallow and the romantic comedy The Hating Game, which he also produced.

Mark Harmon and his son Sean Harmon, who portrayed Gibbs in flashbacks on NCIS and was a driving force behind the prequel, are producing along with David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, who co-write the premiere episode and serve as co-showrunners.

NCIS: Origins is one of two newly announced expansions of CBS Studios' ever-growing NCIS franchise, along with a European Tony & Ziva spinoff starring Michael Weatherly and Cote De Pablo for Paramount+. They join the main series, now in its 21st season, NCIS: Hawaii, now in season 3 and the franchise's first international series, NCIS: Sydney.
