One Piece (2023) - Season 1

After more than 1,000 chapters in the manga series and the anime based on it, Netflix now also brings Monkey D. Luffy to us in the live-action series One Piece (2023). Will they find the 'one piece' here?

Let me get straight to the point. Even though I knew One Piece by name, I haven't read a single copy of the manga nor seen an episode of the anime. However, my son wanted to watch this series with me and that's how I ended up in the world of One Piece (2023).

Because what is One Piece about? The world in One Piece (2023) is divided between two large oceans separated by a mountain range (the Red Line) that runs across the globe. An ideal world for sailors. At his execution, the king of the pirates, Gold Roger (Michael Dorman, Joe Pickett), announces that his hidden treasure – the One Piece – belongs to whoever finds it. This causes the beginning of the age of pirates, in which everyone searches for the One Piece.

Years pass and the One Piece is not found, but that does not stop new generations from starting the search. This also applies to Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy, The Imperfects), a cheerful and sometimes somewhat naive boy who, inspired by his role model: pirate 'Red Haired' Shanks (Peter Gadiot, Yellowjackets), goes in search of the One Piece and the wants to become the new king of the pirates. Armed with a small boat without a crew and without being able to swim at all, he sets out.

In any case, Netflix has succeeded in portraying the world of One Piece in a beautiful and colorful way in this series.

Going into the ocean without knowing how to swim? Certainly, because Monkey is no ordinary boy. When he was younger he ate gum gum, a devil fruit, which makes him special. Something different happens to everyone who eats gum gum, but to Monkey, his body has acquired the properties of rubber. Cool, right? The only disadvantage, however, is that someone who has eaten gum gum can no longer swim in seawater.

In this first season of One Piece (2023) we see how Monkey takes his first steps as a pirate. He acquires a real pirate ship and gathers a real crew around him. He meets swordsman Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), navigator Nami (Emily Rudd, Hunters), chef Sanji (Taz Skylar, Boiling Point) and marksman Usopp (Jacob Romero, Greenleaf).

As they experience their adventures, you learn more and more about the background of the characters and what drives them. Everyone has their own motivation, something that is very important to Monkey as he believes that everyone should pursue their own dream. There is not much time to dream, because they encounter a range of very colorful characters who try to thwart or capture them. Because what about the naval officer 'Ax Hand' Morgan (Lanley Kirkwood, Warrior), Buggy the Clown (Jeff Ward, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) a pirate clown who can separate his body parts and master swordsman Dracule Mihawk (Steven John Ward, Vagrant Queen) who walks around with a giant sword.

In any case, Netflix has managed to portray the world of One Piece (2023) beautifully and colorfully in this series. It all looks slick and everything contributes to the atmosphere you would expect from a film adaptation of such a manga. The use of color, the characters who can occasionally be wonderfully 'over the top' and also the introductions that shoot straight through the screen, contribute to that atmosphere.

As mentioned, I haven't read the manga or seen the anime, so I can't comment on how faithful this series is to the source material. But the story itself is fun and the characters are well portrayed by the various actors. The series alternates between beautiful action scenes with a good portion of humor, but at the same time also dares to tackle serious topics.

Even though the first season only has eight episodes, enough time is spent on everything and you don't need any prior knowledge to watch One Piece (2023). In addition, several storylines are already being developed throughout the season that could be developed in subsequent seasons, so I am very curious about the further development of this series.
