Ronja Rövardotter - Season 1
Ronja the Robber's Daughter will bring back warm memories for many. Ronja Rövardotter, based on the book by Astrid Lindgren, is steeped in magic and timeless themes such as breaking away from your parents and our relationship with nature.
In the Netherlands, we all know Annie M.G. Schmidt, but in Sweden they have Astrid Lingdren, known from Pippi Longstocking. The book was already made into a film in the 1980s. Now Netflix is launching the Swedish fantasy series. Hans Rosenfeldt, the writer of Bron/Broen and Marcella, wrote the script.
The series remains particularly close to the beloved children's book.
The robber chief Mattis lives with his wife Lovis and his gang of robbers in a fortress in the middle of a large forest. During a thundery night, Mattis and Lovis' daughter, Ronja, is born. That same night, Mattis' castle is completely split in two by a lightning strike.
During the first few years of her life, Ronja stays alone in the large robbers' hall. When she explores the outside world, she discovers the forest with all its dangers. In addition to wild animals, the forest is also home to all kinds of strange mythical creatures, such as goblins, trolls and bird witches.
Borka's gang of robbers, Mattis's biggest competitor, appears to have settled in the other half of the split castle. Ronja finds out about this when one day she encounters Borka's son, Birk, near the gorge that divides the castle. The two children become friends and secretly spend more and more time together. This makes the bond between Ronja and Birk even stronger and they start to regard each other as brother and sister.
Cinematically, the series is well put together. The images of the forest and nature surrounding the castle are breathtakingly beautiful and closely resemble the original descriptions and illustrations.
Although each episode manages to hold your attention, the series is very slow. To compensate, the choice was made to add extra characters. For example, there are mercenaries who try to keep the robbers out of the forest. That's where the series goes wrong. It is clear that these figures were added later, because they add little and draw attention away from the core of the story.
And where I thought it was a miniseries of 6 episodes, there will be a second part.
Ronja the Robber's Daughter, no matter how beautifully portrayed, is better suited for an impressive film than a large series.

But to make the fairy tale suitable for a more mature audience, some adjustments have been made to the story. The series delves deeper into the relationship between Ronja and her father, who clearly has difficulty with his rebellious daughter who is growing up into an independent woman. More time is also spent on the Romeo-and-Julia-like friendship between Ronja and Birk. Fortunately, the essence of the fairy tale remains intact. The enchanting character of the forest and the encounters with all kinds of mythical creatures add a touch of magic.Mature audience
