Styx - Season 1
Styx is zombies in Ostend.
Traditionally, Flemish action series are about the emergency services, the police, journalists or private detectives. Fortunately, in recent years there has been a tendency to offer something different. Last year we even got some decent science fiction series. Styx is a new milestone: it is the very first Flemish horror series in prime time, based on a book by Bavo Dhooghe. The name of the book and the series was not chosen by chance. In Greek mythology, the river Styx symbolizes the transition from the world of the living to that of the dead.
Chief Inspector Raphaël Styx (Sebastien Dewaele, Eigen Kweek) is a somewhat worn-out police officer. Styx drinks, is aggressive, seeks comfort from whores and occasionally collects some corrupt pocket money from human smuggler Gino Tersago (Aimé Claeys, 1984). He is married to Isabelle (Loes Haverkort, Moedermaffia), but the marriage is on the verge of collapse. He has an adolescent son who has lost all respect for his father. Things aren't going well at work either. He hates his younger colleague Joachim Delacroix (Werner Kolf, Commandos). That dislike is mutual.
One evening, Styx happens to witness a murder. He corners the killer, but is shot himself and ends up in the sea. The next morning Styx washes up on the beach. Confused, he returns to his home. He soon notices that it stinks and that it is rotting away. And he develops a craving for raw human flesh. Slowly the realization dawns that he was dead and has been resurrected as a zombie. We are far from the mindless, slow zombies we know from series such as the Walking Dead. Styx is a zombie who is fully aware of his identity. He reluctantly accepts his new existence. He is examined by doctor Vrancken (Koen De Bouw, Twee Zomers). He has a secret laboratory in the basement of his house. The doctor promises that he will look for a way to 'cure' Styx. Styx realizes that if his problem is not resolved, he will eventually die again. Yet he sees his resurrection as a second chance to restore the relationship with his wife and son. And he also absolutely wants to track down his killer.
Styx does not have the budget of an American series, so the horror scenes are limited in number and size. But do expect authentic horror, including cannibalism and plenty of blood. The story is cleverly constructed and never boring. The series follows the broad lines of the book, but is much less complex.
This is Sebastien Dewaele's first time leading a series and he does a great job. Considering the subject, no great performances can be expected here, but everyone does their job as they should. Koen De Bouw, not surprisingly, stands out in his role as the maniacal mad scientist.
The series has a full-fledged ending, without leaving you with many questions. I therefore do not immediately expect a second season, but in theory that could be because writer Bavo Dhooghe has written a sequel.
