The Witcher - Season 2

After two years, the second season of The Witcher has finally appeared. Once again, the series proves that it is a leader in fantasy land, although there is certainly room for improvement.

It took a while, but after two years, the second season of The Witcher has finally appeared. Where the previous season was still a bit fragmentary, this season has a tighter chronological course. Despite that, it is noticeable that the story has only just begun.

In The Witcher, we follow the story of three characters whose destinies are intertwined. Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill, The Tudors) is a Witcher, a mutant monster hunter. Princess Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan, Into the Badlands) is his daughter, at least, thanks to some magic. Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra, The ABC Murders) is an elven-blood mage who is also linked to Geralt and Ciri by magic. In the first season, we learned about the backgrounds of the characters and how this bond came about. In the second season, we see how the characters accept their destiny.

Normally, the first season is introductory to the big story and we see how that unfolds in the second season. The Witcher is obviously different from other series. The first season was more like the prologue to the big story, while the second season serves as the first chapter. A first chapter is often a bit calmer and hints at what is yet to come. That's exactly what's happening here.

However, since it is already a second season I can imagine that many people expected more. I can partly agree with that. There could have been a bit more action and spice in this season. Still, I enjoyed watching and I'm curious to see how we continue in the third season. The end of season two promises a lot of good.

Although the main plot sometimes drags along a bit slowly, there are a number of other factors that are again sublime. The sub-storyline around elven politics is very interesting and it's also fun to learn more about the witchers. The series also looks beautiful, of course. It's wonderful to just have a good, strong fantasy series on television. In my opinion, there are always too few. On the one hand, that is understandable, since a fantasy series is much more expensive than a simple rom-com.

The second point worthy of praise is the acting. The actors are incredibly strong and are really starting to embrace their roles better and better. The father-daughter relationship that develops between Geralt and Ciri this season is portrayed very well by Cavill and Allan. Chalotra also stars as Yennefer.

The rest of the cast members do a good job too. This cast includes Eamon Farren (Twin Peaks), Joey Batey (The War of the Worlds), MyAnna Buring (The Salisbury Poisonings), Mimi M. Khayisa (Black Earth Rising), Anna Schaffer (Fearless), Mecia Simson ( Brave New World) and Kim Bodnia (The Letter for the King).

The first season was more like the prologue to the big story, while the second season serves as the first chapter.

Despite the points for improvement, I am satisfied with the second season. The Witcher is incredibly promising. The story is only now really starting to develop and I hope we can sit out the creators' vision. That vision, by the way, is seven seasons. Perfect for a fantasy series in such a complicated world as The Witcher, if you ask me.

The second season of The Witcher gets a 7.5!
