The Mentalist - Season 6 (Part One)
The sixth season of 'The Mentalist' continues where season five ended. Season six is actually
divided into two parts. The first part, consisting of episodes one to eight, is entirely dedicated to
the search for Red John. Each episode has the red colour, or a reference to it, in its title.
Season six starts with Patrick Jane reducing the list of Red John suspects to seven supsicious persons. Lisbon and Jane are the only ones acquainted with the list, but Red John also manages to get a copy. It is obvious that Lisbon doesn't want to solve the case merely with Jane. Therefore, she asks her peculiar, but nice CBI team to help them; the hardly-ever-laughing Cho, who is a man of very few words. Van Pelt, the charming, sympathetic computer analyst who is married to the slightly insecure, comical Rigsby. Together, the five of them are battling Red John. Slowly, the list of suspects starts to shrink, until the climax in episode eight. Personally, it didn't surprise me, it was more of an anti-climax. The end of Red John can't be called spectacular, which is a missed opportunity. The story of Red John could have ended much better and much clearer. Right now, you are left with many questions and few answers.
The following episodes are set two years after the story of Red John has finished. The titles still contain the colours, but aren't a reference to red anymore. That is a major change for the series which showed us Jane and his hunt for revenge. The CBI doesn't exist anymore, Rigsby en Van Pelt own a company and have a daughter, and Cho works for the FBI. Lisbon has become sheriff and Jane stays on an island which doesn't have an extradition treaty with America. The following episodes are a tribute to Jane who can be his annoying, arrogant and confident self again. Within no time he manages to annoy you with his nasty personal traits and cups of tea and everyone is his slave again. I'd like to see somebody who can stand up to Jane and put him into place every now and then. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening soon.
I am not sure whether this lady will continue to watch now the story of Red John has ended. Personally, I think they could have stopped at six seasons and eight episodes.
6.5 points for the inglorious end of the search for Red John.
