Warrior (2019) - Season 1

Cinemax has a range of action series and always performs quite well in this area. This time they got to work with stories from Bruce Lee, resulting in the great action series Warrior (2019).

The series is set against the backdrop of San Francisco's Chinatown in the aftermath of the Civil War. Warrior (2019) tells the story of young martial arts prodigy Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji, The Innocents), newly arrived from China, who finds himself caught up in the bloody Chinatown Tong Wars. The series is based on the concept of martial arts legend Bruce Lee.

Ah Sahm emigrates to San Francisco to look for his sister. From the beginning of the series, he immediately shows what he is made of. He wears a nice suit and actually speaks English, which is quite exceptional in those days. Just ashore, he immediately comes to blows with a number of guards whom he expertly beats. One thing is certain, the action is good.

Due to his striking arrival, he is soon recruited by one of the most powerful tongs who lived in America. There he quickly befriends the son of the head of the tong named Young Jun (Jason Tobin, The King of Queens). Together they take on all kinds of rival Chinese gangs and mainly fight for market share in the opium trade. In addition, they regularly have problems with the police and they have to deal with Irish migrants who do not like Chinese migrants who come to ruin their country (while being migrants themselves). In any case, it provides enough fodder to show off some nice action scenes.

You may have already noticed, but this series is definitely not what you are looking for if you want great dialogue. All events aim to cause yet another brawl. This series is therefore not for people who cannot stand violence, because the gobs of blood fly around your ears, and the necessary bones are cracked or pierced with an ax or knife. In addition, there is no shortage of (superfluous) nudity. As far as I'm concerned, this series doesn't need that at all, but the creators must have thought that female beauty can provide some extra viewers. The characters are having a great time at the local brothel run by Ah Toy (Olivia Cheng, See). This location is not only for some physical refreshments, but things are also discussed and Ah Toy also has the necessary martial arts skills.

Ah Sahm ultimately has to represent a kind of Bruce Lee and I must say that Andrew Koji portrays this character superbly. Most martial arts enthusiasts will say that Bruce Lee is unmatchable, so I won't say that, but I think Bruce Lee's style is well conveyed. He masters all kinds of martial arts, the signature moves are present and he does all the fights himself. This adds to the believability of the character. In addition, towards the end of the first season you see that Ah Sahm is not completely untouchable and he has to take a lot.

The second season has already been broadcast by Cinemax at the end of 2020 and after that, it seemed for a while that Warrior (2019) was over. Fortunately, you can read on MySeries that the series has been renewed for a third season, although this is accompanied by a move from Cinemax to HBO Max. The third season was already confirmed in April 2021, but no updates have been given since then, so fate seemed to strike. The redeeming word came more than a year later in June 2022, with Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter, indicating on her late father's Twitter account that the third season will officially start production on July 18, 2022.

Finally, my compliments for the intro of this series, which is a shame to skip, partly due to the catchy tune and graphics. If the action enthusiasts among us have not yet become acquainted with this series, I would highly recommend it, because it is a pleasure to watch.
